Famous People - Fred Hollows

Thanks to Fred Hollows well over a million people in this world, who would otherwise have been blind, can see. The world is a better place for his  having lived in it. He gave sight to the blind in far away places such as Nepal, Eritrea and Vietnam but it was his unselfish commitment to health and eye care among Australian Aborigines that first made us all sit up and take notice. He worked amongst them, with them and for them in urban Redfern and throughout the red dirt country of Australia. At the end of his life, he was buried  at Bourke, in that same red dirt that he had grown to love as a symbol  of Australia and its indigenous people. Fred Hollows has become a part of the Australian Dreaming. His spirit still exists in the Fred  Hollows Foundation which continues to do his work in Australia and in  many other countries of the world.

NAPLAN Tests are valuable

NAPLAN tests help champion equality in the classroom

BEN JENSEN
Ben Jensen is program director (education) at the Grattan Institute.
April 15, 2010 - 6:08AM
"The national assessments that students will sit this year will provide the first opportunity to measure student progress over time. This will, for the first time in Australia, enable more accurate value-added measures of school performance to be created. An AEU boycott would prevent more accurate measures of school performance being calculated, thereby undermining the very changes that they have said are required."

I think that this article is an important contribution to the current debate.

More NAPLAN resources

Need more Literacy Practice for the NAPLAN Tests?

Use this engaging book on Caroline Chisholm and the 100 Reading and Language Conventions questions with detailed answers.

Caroline Chisholm's image used to be on the Australian five dollar note.
When she was removed from it, there were cries of outrage, and many letters to
politicians and to editors of newspapers.

Caroline was the Immigrants Friend, helping some twenty thousand migrants to settle
in Australia when governments were of little help.

She had heaps of kids of her own and her husband was often away, but she was always on
top of her job. No distance too far. No means of transport too uncomfortable.

Caroline was a doer.

The Australian National Curriculum and NAPLAN

The draft curriculum for mathematics is now available online at the Australian Curriculum consultation website. www.australiancurriculum.edu.au

Current state and territory mathematics curriculum documents have been taken into account during the development of the K–10 mathematics curriculum.

The draft curriculum broadly aligns with those documents in relation to Number and algebra and Measurement and geometry.

Account was also taken of the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for 2008 and 2009 in developing the content and achievement standards.

In terms of difference, the draft K–10 Australian Curriculum for mathematics contains a greater emphasis on statistics and probability in recognition of the need for students to be able to interpret data in the 21st century.

The embedded nature of the proficiency strands is in contrast to some state and territory documents where there is a separate process strand often called ‘working mathematically’.

There is a separate strand to ensure that the processes of mathematics are in context with, and linked to, appropriate mathematical concepts.

The positive side of NAPLAN testing

This article appeared recently in the Australian Newspaper showing the positive side of NAPLAN testing. Read full article here.

SINCE the introduction of the national numeracy and literacy tests three years ago, Michael Phillips has used their results time and again to identify students who need additional help, as well as those those who are excelling and could be placed in advanced classes.

The principal of Ringwood Secondary College, in Melbourne's outer eastern suburbs, says the tests, in conjunction with teacher judgment and other internal assessment, have become invaluable in the way the school structures student learning.

"Together they provide a fairly rich picture of where the student is at," Mr Phillips said yesterday. "It certainly, in many instances, has helped raise levels of achievement of students at a greater rate."

The principal of 15 years opposes the planned ban by the Australian Education Union of the next round of the tests -- known as NAPLAN -- which are scheduled for May. The union's 180,000 public school teachers are refusing to administer the tests unless the federal government prevents the results from being compiled into league tables.

"I am really a bit unsure about the boycott of testing as a solution to the issue," Mr Phillips said. "I would hope that common sense would enable the tests to occur."

He says that stopping the testing will be disruptive for schools that rely on the results to structure programs and student learning.

"From my point of view, we use the NAPLAN data to look at individual student performance and it allows us to plan curriculum for particular groups of kids," he said. "We now have a whole lot of strategies that are informed by NAPLAN . . . and to have that information withdrawn would make it difficult to move forward with the whole student learning agenda."
