ACARA says" "NAPLAN is not a test of content. Instead, it tests skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time through the school curriculum, so excessive test preparation using previous tests is not useful."

Reality check needed!

Errors in Year 5 Reading Test Answers

Be careful if you have already downloaded the ACARA answers to the NAPLAN Example Reading Test for Year 5. THERE WERE 7 WRONG ANSWERS. Q20, 21, 22, 23, 26, 29, 30. 
ACARA has now removed the answer sheet from its website. Presumably, the correct answers will appear there shortly. Throw away your original answer sheet.

ACARA has now removed all of the previous May NAPLAN tests from its website and has replaced them with a complete set of NAPLAN Example Tests for Years 3, 5, 7, 9. You can download the tests here.
Unfortunately, only single letter answers are provided for the tests (A, B, C, D). No explanation is given.

Correction for yesterday's language question.  The correct punctuation.

"It's not fair! The dog has eaten its dinner and now has also eaten the cat's dinner."

• It's is short for It is  and an apostrophe is required to indicate this.
• cat's requires an apostrophe to indicate possession
• There is no apostrophe in its dinner

About NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. All government, and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials.

Why students are required to participate in the NAPLAN test

NAPLAN is the measure through which governments, education authorities, schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education programs are working and which areas need to be prioritised for improvement.
NAPLAN tests are one aspect of the school's assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student's performance.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE BY KILBAHA MULTIMEDIA PUBLISHING
It has just been pointed out by a reader that for the May 2010 NAPLAN Tests, ONLY the numeracy tests have been made available on the ACARA website. Hopefully, schools have had the good sense to keep copies of the May 2010 and May 2011 NAPLAN tests. If you have not already done so, download the May 2008 and May 2009 NAPLAN tests NOW. there is no telling how long they will be there!

Where are the May 2011 NAPLAN Tests?

For reasons unknown, ACARA has not released (and perhaps never will release) the test questions for the May 2011 NAPLAN tests on its website. http://www.nap.edu.au/NAPLAN/The_tests/index.html. Presumably, most schools have access to these questions from copies unused from 2011.

Unfortunately, ACARA has changed its policy and only has a set of Example Tests on the Web Site. The May NAPLAN Tests are copyright ACARA and no one is allowed to publish them. Many schools (smart move!) have kept copies of these tests. Kilbaha has produced detailed answers to all of the May NAPLAN Tests.

VERY IMPORTANT

Acara has recently made the following statement on its NAPLAN website:

"Not all previous tests have been made available and test answers are not supplied.
A full set of sample tests for public viewing is currently under development and will replace the currently available tests for 2008-to the current year" 

The implication of this statement would appear to be that the May 2011 Tests will not be made available for public viewing and that the 2008, 2009, 2010 May Tests will soon be removed from the Web Site.

Nearing end of term! - Just for laughs - Happy holidays to all.

Lipstick in School

 

According to a news report, a certain private school in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs was recently faced with an unusual problem . 

A number of the girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints

Every night the maintenance man would remove them and the next day the girls would put them back . Finally the Headmistress decided that something had to be done ... She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man  

She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses) ..

To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required.  He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet bowl, and cleaned the mirror with it. 

The silence was broken by a large number of gasps, a few girls vomited and apparently someone fainted . Since then there have been no lip prints on the mirror .

As stated by ACARA (The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority), "Education ministers have agreed that substantial implementation of the Foundation to Year 10 Australian Curriculum for English, Mathematics, Science and History will have been achieved by the end of 2013"

The new Australian Curriculum will be implemented in some Australian schools in 2012.

NAPLAN Blog hacked?

Dear Reader,

On Friday May 13 on this Blog, I posted a letter of mine which had been published in The Age Newspaper on May 12, 2011. I gave the link to the full letters page in The Age to acknowledge its source. To my surprise, I found that the complete post from May 13 had been deleted by Saturday morning.

If you are reading this, please do me a favour. Copy this post NOW and send it to as many Web Sites as possible because the same thing may happen again (by whom I do not know, for no one has claimed responsibility for this hack). Is this a case of Nappileaks?

Here is my letter again. It really annoyed those who hate NAPLAN testing.

NAPLAN matters

RECENT Age articles and a number of letters from readers show an ignorance about the National Literacy and Numeracy tests. These are diagnostic tests designed to provide information about the strengths and weaknesses of students in the critical areas of literacy and numeracy. Most parents want to know how well their children can spell, punctuate, use correct grammar, understand what they read and think mathematically. We are being altogether too precious about our children if we do not allow them to participate in NAPLAN.

In fact, we are doing them a disservice. Ignorance is not bliss.
