Message from Robert Randall (ACARA)

"The seventh annual National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is about five weeks away.

Of particular note is that the Year 9 students sitting NAPLAN this year were the first group of children to sit NAPLAN tests in 2008. Having seven years of data will definitely give us important insights into the accomplishments of young Australians in the essential areas of literacy and numeracy.

For the estimated 1.1 million students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 who will take part in NAPLAN on 13, 14 and 15 May 2014, the tests should not be a stressful time. It is important for children to know that NAPLAN is not a pass or fail test, and it is not high stakes for them.

From our perspective and those of education authorities nationwide, it is very important that checks are made along the way to see how well young Australians are learning the skills of reading, writing and mathematics – the essential skills that will set them firmly upon the path to success as adults in the 21st century"
